Nature of the Work, Earnings and Occupational Outlook

Nurses play a critical role in promoting health, preventing illness, and providing care to individuals across the lifespan. To practice nursing in the United States, individuals must obtain a Registered Nurse (RN) license by passing the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN). Registered nurses are responsible for a wide range of patient care activities, including assessing and monitoring patient conditions, administering medications and treatments, implementing healthcare plans, and educating patients and families about wellness and disease prevention. The following are clinical tasks performed by Registered Nurses:

Conducting patient assessments
Administering medications
Administering blood products
Administering chemotherapy agents
Obtaining vital signs and monitoring patients for changes in condition
Inserting and maintaining intravenous lines, nasogastric tubes, and urinary catheters
Performing phlebotomy
Obtaining specimens for laboratory testing
Providing basic and advanced wound care
Providing education to patients and their families

Registered nurses work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, physician offices, schools, long-term care facilities, home health agencies, and public health organizations. Depending on the employer, nurses may work 8, 10, or 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call hours. While nursing can be physically and emotionally demanding, it offers a rewarding career with opportunities to make a meaningful difference in patients' lives every day.

Registered nurses with either a two-year associate degree or a four-year bachelor's degree in nursing can start working in entry-level positions at different healthcare settings. The starting salary for new graduates with an associate’s degree in nursing is $56,180 annually (Nursing Process, 2025). On the other hand, the starting salary for registered nurses with a BSN is approximately $64,000 annually. The median annual wage for registered nurses was $93,600 in May 2024. The job outlook for registered nurses remains strong. The employment rate is projected to grow by about 5% from 2024 to 2034, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Approximately 189,100 job openings are expected each year, largely due to workforce turnover and retirements. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2025).

Nursing offers numerous opportunities for career growth and specialization. After gaining clinical experience, registered nurses may pursue specialty certifications in areas such as emergency nursing, critical care, pediatrics, oncology, labor and delivery, or perioperative nursing. Nurses who earn advanced degrees can become nurse practitioners, nurse educators, nurse administrators, clinical nurse specialists, or nurse anesthetists. Continuing education and professional development allow nurses to expand their knowledge, increase earning potential, and take on leadership roles within the healthcare profession.

Key Differences Between ADN and BSN

An Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is a two-year college-level nursing program offered at various community colleges. It provides foundational nursing education and prepares students to take the NCLEX-RN. Key features:

Shorter duration and lower cost
Focus on core clinical skills and patient care
Includes coursework in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, and pharmacology
Combines classroom instruction with lab and clinical experience
Graduates can begin working as RNs relatively quickly
Often employed in entry-level clinical roles
May have limited advancement opportunities without further education

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a four-year degree offered by colleges and universities and provides a more comprehensive nursing education. Key Features:

Broader curriculum including leadership, research, public health, and ethics

Includes all ADN-level clinical training plus expanded coursework
Greater access to leadership, management, and specialized roles

Application

Admission to nursing programs is highly competitive because enrollment is limited. Applicants must typically apply both to the college or university and separately to the nursing program. Common admission requirements include:

Minimum age of 18 years at the time of admission

Successful completion of an entrance examination, such as the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)
Personal interview, if required by the nursing program

CSUF has a recency requirement of 5 years for the four required science prerequisite courses.
Both in-person and online course formats for all prerequisites including labs are acceptable.
Courses should not be taken for Credit/No Credit. If a course has already been taken and passed for Credit, CSUF will assume a grade of “C” for such course(s).
Credit earned through AP, IB, or CLEP exams is acceptable for non-science prerequisite courses and for Chemistry. CSUF will not accept AP, IB, or CLEP scores for Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, or Microbiology.

Join AS��ԭ�� as an Ambassador and gain valuable leadership experience while representing the student voice. AS��ԭ�� Ambassadors serve on campus committees, provide operational support, and help shape initiatives that enhance the student experience. Ambassadors also have the opportunity to participate in committee discussions and cast an implied advisory vote on matters related to their assigned committee. The position is an appointed position by the AS��ԭ�� President.

Requirements

The student shall be enrolled at ��ԭ�� at the time of election and throughout their term, with a minimum of five (5) cumulative semester units at ��ԭ��.
- Alternatively, the student shall be enrolled in an adult education program offered by ��ԭ�� pursuant to Article 9 (commencing with Section 84900) of Chapter 5 of Part 50, at the time of the election and throughout their term.
- Or, the student is enrolled at ��ԭ�� at the time of election and throughout the student's term, and is a disabled student, as defined in subdivision (b) of Section 84850.
The student shall meet and maintain the minimum standards of scholarship prescribed for ��ԭ�� students by the South Orange County Community College District.
A student elected or appointed to serve as an officer in AS��ԭ�� must have ��ԭ�� listed as their College of Record. A student elected or appointed to serve as an officer in AS��ԭ�� shall not be on academic or progress probation, must be in good disciplinary standing, and shall not be in violation of Title IX.
Any officer who is under active investigation for a Title IX violation shall be immediately suspended from their position until the investigation is concluded and a final determination is made.
A student elected or appointed to serve as an officer in AS��ԭ�� must adhere to the Student Leader Expectations form unless alternative arrangements are made with the AS��ԭ�� Advisor.
A student elected or appointed to serve as an officer in AS��ԭ�� must have and maintain a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 in all college units completed at ��ԭ��.

New Campus Map and Signage

Beginning in Fall 2026, ��ԭ�� will introduce new campus signage and an updated campus map to make it easier to find your way around campus. These updates are part of ��ԭ��’s Student-Focused Signage Project and are designed to create a clearer, more welcoming campus experience for students, employees, and visitors.

What's Changing

��ԭ�� buildings are now organized into four campus quads:
North | South | East | West

Buildings will use a new letter and number system based on their location. For example, buildings in the North Quad begin with “N,” such as N1 or N3.

Each quad will also be color-coded for easier navigation:

Green: North Quad
Orange: East Quad
Teal: South Quad
Pink: West Quad

How to Find a Building

Need help matching a building code to its name?

Check the “Buildings” section at the bottom of the Campus Map. It lists each building’s letter and number along with its name. For example: N1: Liberal Arts

Welcome to ��ԭ�� Inspire 2035, ��ԭ�� (��ԭ��)'s roadmap for the future.

This webpage represents the culmination of a yearlong, campus wide effort to define who we are, what we value, and where we aspire to go as a college. Building on the South Orange County Community College District's ten-month strategic planning process, members of our college community engaged in meaningful dialogue through shared governance councils, committees, town halls, and campus conversations to shape the priorities, goals, values, vision, and mission that will guide ��ԭ�� through 2035.

The result is a strategic framework grounded in the collective voices, expertise, and aspirations of our students, employees, and community partners. Together, we established six institutional priorities and twelve college-wide goals, affirmed a shared set of institutional values, and developed a new vision and mission that reflect our commitment to student success, equity, innovation, belonging, and community impact.
